Nearly 1 in 7 new mothers in the U.S. have a prolonged period of overwhelming depression or anxiety after giving birth. This postpartum depression occurs in the developing world, too. But psychiatrists say it's hard to get doctors interested in treating it. Many are not trained for it, and insurance companies often don't reimburse for it.
July 28, 2011 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Women who have breastfeeding difficulties in the first two weeks after giving birth are more likely to suffer postpartum depression two months later compared to women without such difficulties (see also Depression).
